Bagavannama Bodhendra Swamigal was a 17th century saint poet and the 59th 'Jagathguru' of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. A scholar in Sanskrit, he was a great devotee of Lord Rama. His contribution enriched the devotional and musical culture of the Cauvery delta during the Nayak and Maratha periods. His original name was Purushothaman, which was christened by Viswathikendra Saraswathy (known as Athmabodhar), who was the 58th 'Jagathguru' of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. On justifying the efficacy of the 'Rama Nama', he came to be known as 'Bhagavan Nama Bodhendra'. Bodhendra wrote eight 'Granthas', expounding the greatness of Bhagavan Nama, which include Namamritha Rasodhayam, Nama Rasayanam, Nama Suryodhayam, Nama Tharangam, Namarnavam, Harihara Beda Dikkaram, Hariharadvaita Bhooshanam and Moorthabrahma Vivekam. After a pilgrimage to Rameswaram, Bodhendra is said to have met Sridhara Ayyaval of Thiruvisainallur and then visited Thiruvidaimarudur, where he propagated the 'Nama Sankeerthanam'. Bodhendra Swamigal attained 'Jeeva Samadhi' in a yogic state in the Tamizh month of Purattasi in 1692 at Govindapuram.
