Born at the same place as Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshithar belonged to a family of musicians. His father Ramaswamy and brother Baluswamy were great musicians. Following an order from a saint called Chidambaranadha yogi, Dikshithar went to Kasi and spent about 5 years. On his way back from Kasi, Dikshithar, stopped at the Lord Subramanya swami temple at Thiruththani. It is believed that Lord himself appeared before Dikshithar and put a sugar crystal in Dikshithar's mouth and disappeared. It is said that eversince that moment, Dikshithar composed several songs carrying the mudra Guruguha.
